KAUA’I RATED TOPS FOR TRAVELERS BY CONDE NAST TRAVELER SURVEY

Maui and Kaua’i were the top islands in the United States, as reported by Conde Nast Traveler Survey of nearly 29,000 readers.

While both islands offer unique travel experiences, they are also very different in character.  On Maui, there are many luxury hotels, iconic features like Haleakala Volcano, and fine dining.  Maui has built an enviable reputation as a must-visit island.  It has also been called, wryly, the west coast of California.

Kaua’i’s personality is different.  Kauai does have beautiful resorts like the Grand Hyatt in Po’ipu, the St. Regis Princeville Resort, and the luxury vacation rental resort Waipouli Beach Resort in Kapa’a, a Westin Resort, and two Marriott Resorts.  But it is much more like the old Hawai’i with vast expanses of green, ancient and long- dormant volcanoes, a slow-growth orientation supported by the local government and the public, countless beaches, many in the Top Ten beach ratings (since Kaua’i is the oldest main island, beaches have had millions of years to develop). Lots of adventure outings, land or sea, and a laid-back magical feeling.

Kauai Lifeguard Association Fund Raiser a Big Hit

Organized by many individuals and organizations, the Oct 9 ‘First Wave Celebration” was a great success, attended by several hundred and held at the Kilohana Plantation Luau room.

Donations of a jet ski rescue system, and an off road vehicle, and a vigorous silent and live auction, raised significant funds for strengthening the Lifeguard services.  Stars performing included Taj Mahal, John Cruz, comedians Frank De Lima and Andy Bumatai, and others.

Such fund-raisers are common on Kauai, and there is no down-side.  Residents of Kauaiget to see well known entertainers, savor some great grinds and wine, socialize, and the sponsors make money for their services.

Such public enthusiasm demonstrates once again that people on Kauai are a big family, and responsive to the needs of the island.
