Kauai Surfer Leila Hurst claims World Junior title in Australia

Kauai once again laid claim to the island where great surf and champion surfers reign.

Names like Andy and Bruce Irons, Bethany Hamilton, Alana Blanchard, Titus Kinimaka and other surfing legends now align with Kauai’s Leila Hurst, who won the prestigious ASP World Junior title this week in Queensland, Australia, beating out the world’s best in her section.  Kauai is no ka oi (none better) for the Aloha spirit, great surfing, natural beauty, scenic splendor, superb weather (even the occasional North Shore rain is called a blessing), land and sea sports, and great living or visiting amenities abound.

Kaua’i’s Bruce Irons, brother of three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons, who died last year to world-wide grieving, presented the Andy Irons Trophy to surfer Jeremy Flores, the first recipient.  The standard for the award is for outstanding surfing (Flores had two rides of perfect tens), persistence, and sheer guts.

Teahupoo in Tahiti is regarded by many as the premier big wave surfing spot in the world, although the pros may differ considering Jaws, the Banzai Pipeline, Outside Hanalei Bay off Princeville, and many others which are condition dependent.

Andy and Brother Bruce are idolized by surfers around the world, and Princeville/Hanalei Kaua’i, their home base, is particularly revered as well.

Fantastic surfing can be seen by Googling Billabong Pro Tahiti, which has many videos of the great athleticism and skills of the best in the world.  The event was won by ten-times ASP World Champion Kelly Slater, now an ‘aged’ 39 years old, proving once again that in some sports, experience counts.

Be a part of the island of water sports greatness: Kaua’i.
